What Really Is The Difference Between Antiques, Vintage and Collectable ?

If you are like me in any which way, sometimes you can get caught in a squirrel moment of “oh shiny” and purchase something on a whim, thinking it was of value or thought you were getting a deal for an old piece of furniture. Sometimes that deal is not the “real deal” but is a replica that you will not be able to recoup the money you have spent. Most of us have been there. Some more than others.

So what is the difference between an antique, vintage and a collectible? These three terms are often thrown around incorrectly and very loosely. Not everything that is old is an antique and not everything is a valuable collectible. The following is the “quick note” version of the three terms:

Antiques

Antiques are not just “anything old”. Their requirements are quite simple enough, that an object to be classified as an antique must be made 100 years before the date of purchase. These objects can be a work of art, pieces of furniture and decorative objects.

Vintage

Vintage items should be anything that is 20 years or older. These items should speak of the era in which it was produced in. The items should have certain qualities associated with or belonging to a specific era. Clothing is perhaps the easiest to distinguish as vintage as each time era has certain styles, patterns and materials that were used.

Collectables

Collectables are referred to as an item valued for their rarity by collectors. They are generally under 100 years old and are distinguished from antiques. Some examples are coins, sports memorabilia, artifacts, limited edition figurines or replicas of movie props.

The value of these such items is determined by the demand for them. Sometimes collectibles can sell much higher than an antique because there is no demand for the rare antique but there is a demand for the newer collectible. Always make sure to do your research on eras to learn the craftsmanship and characteristics of different time periods. It could save you money and the heartache of purchasing a replica that is not worth the money spent. Whether antiques, vintage or collectibles are your preference, each style has so much uniqueness to offer our homes. They can create such a welcoming atmosphere in your home. Which one is your style?
